Welcome! My name is Scott, and I am the creator and writer for this site, Weathered Wisdom. I’m a regular guy in Connecticut who was busy doing regular middle-aged things: working full time, raising kids, and dreaming of a retirement filled with relaxation, hobbies, and travel. One day I woke up and realized that it was time to move beyond dreaming and into actively planning my retirement. Furthermore, I got this wild notion in my head that maybe the best way to achieve my goals might be retiring abroad. I suddenly started filling my free time with retirement research on considerations like budgeting, social security and healthcare, and also learning about the practicalities of living abroad in Europe.
Great, right? But what does that have to do with me deciding to create a blog? Well, to understand that you need to know a little more about the type of person I am. You know how when it comes to planning a trip there always seems to be two types of people in the relationship: the planner who researches every aspect of the trip (reading reviews, making lists), and the spouse/partner who forgets the dates and maybe isn’t even too sure about where you are going?
Well, let’s just say that I am the definitely the former. 😳
I have always been very detail oriented which is maybe not too surprising given my background as a technology executive with a 30-year career in computer engineering. So when I decided it was time to learn about retirement and retiring abroad, I did what I always do – research the heck out of it.
At the same time, I also started thinking about what I would do with all that free time in retirement. I already have some great hobbies (cooking, cats, travel), but I have always been interested in writing. So, I thought to myself…maybe someone else might benefit from all this time I am putting into my own research, and maybe I would also enjoy writing and sharing my experiences and lessons learned. Thus, Weathered Wisdom was born!
